Iraq: Humanitarian Affairs Officer, Reporting

CANADEM is seeking individuals (Canadian citizens or permanent residents) with previous relevant experience available for an immediate deployment to Iraq as a seconded expert with OCHA for a 3-months contract.

The deployment of a Humanitarian Affairs Officer, Reporting at the P~3 level is urgently needed to support the Head of Office and country office.

Tasks and duties:

• Monitors, analyzes and reports on humanitarian developments, disaster relief/management or emergency situations in assigned area.
• Support the office's reporting efforts through contributing to the drafting of specific types of communication products (situation reports, studies, background papers, policy guidelines, press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders etc.)
• Establishes arid maintains contacts with relevant partners for information collection and information sharing.
• Supports public information efforts as requested.
• Other duties as requested.

Specific required skills (education, experience, languages, etc)

Education:
• Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in, political science, social science, public administration, international studies, economics, engineering, earth sciences or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work experience:
• Sound knowledge of and exposure to the field of humanitarian assistance, protection and human rights issues, strong analytical capacity and in particular the ability to analyse the humanitarian dimension of issues which require a coordinated UN response.
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in humanitarian affairs., emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or other related area. Field experience working in crisis countries during complex emergencies or disaster situation is desirable. Crisis reporting experience is desirable.
• Must have strong written communication skills and ability to work rapidly, under pressure, and to translate field reports into products and messages relevant for OCHA's audience, as well as for the Humanitarian Coordinator and Humanitarian Country Team.

Language requirements:
• Fluency in oral and written English is essential.
• Fluency in oral and written Arabic is desirable.
