Org. Setting and Reporting

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the OCHA ROMENA Deputy Head of Office, the Humanitarian Intern will work on following up on the implementation, reviewing, documenting, mapping and reporting on various plan of actions and memorandum of understanding UNOCHA ROMENA has and other office daily follow up issues as required. The Humanitarian intern works in close collaboration with the OCHA ROMENA team to achieve delivered tasks and responsibilities.The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. These positions are located in the Operations and Advocacy Division, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principles humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions This internship will be based in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, based in Cairo, Egypt, providing support related to HNO/ HRP engagement in humanitarian action. This internship is being offered for a maximum period of three months, beginning at a mutually agreed time.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for the following duties: - Support the implementation of the OCHA Plan of Actions (Turkey specifically), including internal coordination with responsible units within OCHA, and outreach to different Turkish entities. - Assist in the organization of meetings, conferences, workshops and other coordination and advocacy events; contribute substantively to the preparation of talking points, background notes and presentations.- Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources on assigned issues, such as humanitarian needs in the region; propose visualization ideas to produce infographic materials; - Contribute to the preparation of a range of written and visual information products, including reports, studies, background papers, policy guidelines, correspondence, presentations, web stories and multimedia material.- In collaboration with the Preparedness and Response Unit, support on emergency readiness and response-related activities as a focal point for selected countries in the MENA region.- Provide translation support as required. - Contributes to the various reports, documents and communications, e.g. drafts sections of surveys, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents, briefings, case studies, presentations, correspondence, talking points, etc. . - Actively engages in working groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian and emergency response matters. - Assisting in the daily work of the office including the follow ups of the annual programs, plan of action and coordination issues: - Prepare information materials for humanitarian advocacy and sharing with other partners; Perform any other administrative work related to the office work; - Performs other duties as required.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must be 4th year university student or completed university degree (Bachelors) in political and/or social science, international relations, public administration, law, economics, or other related fields.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional working experience for participation in the Programme though any academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian affairs issues including humanitarian financing mechanisms, humanitarian funding trends, gender equality programming, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development and/or human rights is desirable. Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations, a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and; have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English and Turkish (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed based on their Personal History Profile (PHP). Individua linterviews may be conducted by the Hiring Manager directly for further consideration.
